Retinal Vascular Response to Breathing Increased Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Concentrations.

چکیده
The retina has a high rate of oxygen consumption, and the retinal vessels are knoion to constrict with increased arterial oxygen tension and dilate ivhen arterial oxygen falls. In 10 subjects, measurement of retinal venous oxygen saturation by a photographic technique has shown an increase from 55 ± 8 per cent saturation breathing air to 82 ± 9 per cent breathing 100 per cent Os. This increase was accompanied by a 12 ± 6 per cent decrease in retinal arterial size and a decrease of 15 ± 3 per cent in venous diameter. This 27 per cent increase in oxygen saturation is significantly greater than the expected maximum increase of 15 per cent. Unlike the cerebral vessels, the retinal vessels showed no significant vasodilatation following inhalation of 10 per cent COS21 per cent Ot. However, there was a significant increase (p < .005) in retinal venous oxygen saturation, suggesting that a flow change had occurred. The inhalation of 10 per cent COs90 per cent O» significantly reduced the vasoconstrictor effect of oxygen alone while significantly increasing the retinal venous oxygen saturation to 88 ± 9 per cent from 82 ± 9 per cent found with Ot inhalation alone. From the decrease in retinal arteriovenous O2 difference, it appears that retinal blood fiow can alter without changes in visible vessel diameter. It is possible that vessel diameter is changing in vessels which are too small to be measured by the present technique. Carbon dioxide appears to be capable of significantly reducing the vasocotistrictor response to oxygen.

Effect of increased oxygen tension on flicker-induced vasodilatation in the human retina
In the retina, blood flow and neural activity are tightly coupled. Stimulation of the retina with flickering light is accompanied by an increase in blood flow. The current study seeks to investigate whether an increase in oxygen tension modulates flicker (FL)-induced vasodilatation in the human retina. A total of 52 healthy volunteers were included. Via a breathing mask, 100% oxygen (O(2)) was ...
متن کاملAcute effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide on retinal vascular network geometry in hypertensive and normotensive subjects.
The optimal design of vascular networks maximizes circulatory efficiency while minimizing power costs. We investigated the effects of acute changes in vascular tone on retinal arteriolar network geometry. Six hypertensive and six normotensive subjects each breathed air, 5% CO(2) (with 12% O(2)), and 100% O(2) for 5 min periods in random order. Retinal photographs were taken at the end of each t...
متن کاملSCIENTIFIC REPORT Response of choroidal blood flow to carbogen breathing in smokers and non-smokers
Aim: To investigate a potential difference in ocular vascular reactivity during carbogen breathing in optic nerve head, choroid, and retina between healthy smokers and nonsmokers. Methods: 25 (13 smokers and 12 non-smokers) healthy male volunteers participated in this observer masked, two cohort study. During inhalation of carbogen (5% CO2 and 95% O2) over 10 minutes measurements were taken usi...
متن کاملPeripheral vascular and cardiac effects of nitrous oxide in the bovine.
Peripheral vascular and myocardial effects of increasing concentrations of nitrous oxide (0 to 70 per cent) in oxygen were determined in 15 unanaesthetized calves before and after replacement in their natural heart (NH) with a pneumatically driven artificial heart (AH). Nitrous oxide produced concentration-related decreases in arterial and mixed venous pH and increases in minute ventilation and...
متن کاملRegulation of retinal oxygen metabolism in humans during graded hypoxia.
Animal experiments indicate that the inner retina keeps its oxygen extraction constant despite systemic hypoxia. For the human retina no such data exist. In the present study we hypothesized that systemic hypoxia does not alter inner retinal oxygen extraction. To test this hypothesis we included 30 healthy male and female subjects aged between 18 and 35 years. All subjects were studied at basel...
